Gov. Charlie Baker announced Wednesday that the Big E fairgrounds will serve as the next coronavirus testing center for Massachusetts public safety personnel.

The state’s second testing location will open Thursday in West Springfield, doubling the number of free, drive-thru tests available for first responders and other emergency management workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said 87,511 people have been tested in the state after 6,167 new tests were conducted Wednesday.

The first public safety personnel testing site, which is at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, opened Sunday.

“Thanks to a lot of hard work, we continue to perform at a level above where we anticipated, and we are one of the top testers in the country on a per-capita basis,” Baker said.
