A house exploded during the evening of February 19, 2009 in the southeastern Massachusetts town of Somerset. According to officials, one fatality was reported.
State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan stated that the explosion happened about 6:30 p.m. on New York Avenue; reportedly, one person died.
The house had been totally destroyed by an apparent gas explosion. In addition to the house that exploded, at least two other houses sustained serious damage.
A neighbor who lives on nearby Connecticut Avenue said she was making dinner when she heard a sound like “a very loud sonic boom. That’s the only thing I can compare it to. The way the house shook, it was unbelievable.” She estimated her house is about 100 yards from the explosion scene. Residents were evacuated to a nearby school.
