A National Grid worker was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle in Spencer, Massachusetts, according to police.
The crash happened at about 10:30 a.m. on Route 9, where authorities said the worker had been marking the roadway for a future project.
“It’s just a terrible, terrible accident,” witness Denise Cole said.
The 50-year-old worker from Dudley had been in the eastbound lane of the roadway when police said he was struck by a white sport utility vehicle which was also traveling eastbound.
“My daughter heard someone screaming from her window above so she looked out and she came down and she said, ‘there’s someone laying in the road mom,'” Cole recalled.
Police said the worker, who has not been identified, was thrown roughly 40-feet as a result of the impact of the crash.
Witnesses said the victim was initially unconscious, but a good Samaritan stopped and tried to help.
