According to the police department, a 15-year-old boy has drowned at Greater Lowell Technical High School in Tyngsborough. Police and firefighters performed CPR, but the boy was pronounced dead after being rushed to Lowell General Hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said the drowning appeared to be accidental. The victim was a freshman at the school. She said the school is still investigating and had no other details to release.
Drowning tragedies occur for various reasons, including issues relating to inadequate supervision by lifeguards or other water safety personnel, and inadequate safety precautions such as fences and life-saving equipment. Additionally, no matter what your skill level, it is always advisable to swim in the presence of at least one other person, so that assistance can be sought in the event of an emergency. This is particularly important given that drownings are often “silent”, and thus can happen unnoticed even by those in relatively close proximity.
