A 52-year-old woman who had worked for 15 years as a meat wrapper developed debilitating headaches, shortness of breath and asthmatic-type wheezing.
Diagnostic investigation revealed that these symptoms were caused by her prolonged exposure to noxious fumes generated by the use of hot wire cutting tools and hot polyvinyl plastic film in the meat wrapping process. This industrial disease has been denominated “meat wrappers’ asthma” in recent medical literature.
