FITCHBURG, Mass. — A woman is dead after a tire smashed through the windshield of her vehicle as she was driving Wednesday afternoon, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

State police said the crash happened around 1 p.m. Wednesday on Route 2 in Fitchburg, between Mt. Elam Road and Merriman Avenue. Upon arrival, troopers found a Jeep SUV that had been struck in the windshield by a large tire and rim.

The driver of the Jeep, a 42-year-old Templeton woman, was seriously injured in the crash. She was transported by ambulance to Leominster Hospital, where she was then flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester by medical helicopter.

The woman died of her injuries at UMass Memorial Wednesday night, according to state police. Authorities are not identifying the victim at this time.

The right lane of the westbound side of the highway was closed after the tire crossed the median of the divided highway and struck the Jeep Cherokee.

The deputy chief of the Fitchburg Fire Department said the victim had suffered head trauma when she was transported from the scene of the crash.

State police said investigators are trying to determine which vehicle the tire and rim came from, and whether it came off the axle or was being transported and became unsecured.

Investigators are still looking to identify the driver of the vehicle the tire flew off of. According to state police, a social media post they made earlier in the day that stated the driver of the other vehicle had been identified was inaccurate.

State police said they identified another vehicle that was in the area of the crash, but they have not determined whether that vehicle or another one was the source of the loose tire.

State police troopers from the Leominster Barracks, the Worcester County Detective Unit and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information that may be helpful to the investigation are asked to call the Leominster Barracks at 978-537-2188.
