One Survey – Safest Electric Cars Available in 2023 and 2024

U.S. News and World Report recently compiled a list of the safest electric vehicles currently available to motorists. They are as follows:

  • 2023 Nissan Leaf
  • 2023 Audi e-tron
  • 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5
  • 2024 Audi Q8 e-tron
  • 2023 Volkswagen ID.4
  • 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E
  • 2023 Tesla Model Y
  • 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge
  • 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge
  • 2023 Tesla Model 3
  • 2023 Kia EV6
  • 2023 Genesis GV60
  • 2023 Rivian R1T

All these vehicles have relatively high safety scores. Otherwise, they may vary in regard to certain qualities.

For example, the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E is an SUV with plenty of cargo space. It might thus appeal to someone looking for an electric vehicle that’s ideal for a motorist with a large family.

The 2023 Nissan Leaf, on the other hand, doesn’t offer as much cargo space. What it does offer is the sleekness, agility, and acceleration of a sports car.

Review your options carefully to determine which is best for you. Be sure to consider future plans when doing so. For instance, you may not have a family now, but you might plan to in the near future. Or, you may currently live in an area where you need to drive everywhere to run errands. As such, you’d need a vehicle with cargo space. If you anticipate moving to a more walkable city like Boston, you might prefer a smaller vehicle.

Important Electric Vehicle Safety Features to be Aware Of

The vehicles above don’t all offer the exact same safety features. That said, the following are key features that many of those models offer:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alerts
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Backup cameras
  • Anti-lock braking
  • Brake assist
  • Traction control

That’s not an exhaustive list. Be aware, you may not be able to find a vehicle with all these safety features and qualities. However, if you make a list of the features that are most important to you, you may be able to find a safe electric vehicle that meets most of your criteria.

You should also remember the basics when considering safety features. Along with high tech driver-assistance features and related innovations, you also want to find an electric car that’s durable, has strong headlamps, etc.

When driving an electric car, though, you should consider how one of an electric vehicle’s appealing qualities may actually result in danger to others in certain circumstances.

Are Electric Vehicles Safer Than Traditional Gas Cars?

Electric cars aren’t just better for the environment than other types of vehicles. There’s also reason to believe they’re safer. First, electric cars are fairly new. As a result, they often boast safety features that may not be available in older cars.

Other reasons electric vehicles are sometimes safer than gas cars include:

  • There’s less of a chance of fires or explosions involving electric vehicles
  • Electric cars often have low centers of gravity, which may guard against rollover accidents
  • Instant torque and regenerative braking are common safety features of electric vehicles that gas cars may not offer

When driving an electric car, though, you should consider how one of an electric vehicle’s appealing qualities may actually result in danger to others in certain circumstances. Specifically, electric cars don’t make nearly as much noise as gas vehicles.

On the one hand, many fans of electric vehicles appreciate this quality. They simply need to remember that pedestrians and bicyclists may be less likely to hear them approaching. Account for this when driving in a busy city like Boston, making sure you’ve alerted pedestrians to your presence whenever doing so seems necessary.

For example, you may need to honk your horn if a pedestrian appears to be entering a crosswalk because they don’t hear your vehicle. Many blind pedestrians actually rely on their hearing to let them know whether it’s safe to cross the street.
