A man was struck and killed by a commuter rail train in Gloucester today, an MBTA spokesman said.

It is unclear why the man, who was struck around 2:25 p.m. roughly 500 yards north of Gloucester Station, was on the tracks, spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. The Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line is currently experiencing 20-25 minute delays due to the police investigation, according to alerts posted on the MBTA website.
As the use of public transit continues to grow, concerns have increased regarding the safety of riders and drivers.
