A school bus carrying Lexington-bound Metco students crashed in Newton today, sending 34 students and their driver to local hospitals with injuries, State Police said.
The three-vehicle crash took place around 7:30 a.m. today on the westbound lanes of Route 9 near the intersection with Woodcliff Road in Newton, State Police said in a statement. Seven children had bumps and bruises. The remaining 23 minors were transported because they were too young to legally refuse medical treatment, Fricke said.
Metco, founded in 1966, currently sends 3,300 children from Boston and Springfield to suburban school systems. John Chandler, a Metco official, said the bus was carrying Metco students en route to one of Lexington’s middle schools. He said Metco headquarters was told none of the students were seriously injured. The investigation is ongoing, but State Police said it appears that the bus rear-ended a vehicle stopped at a traffic light, pushing the first car into a second vehicle also stopped at the traffic light.
