The Boston Fire Department says two workers were injured Tuesday in a transformer explosion that happened in the city’s Beacon Hill neighborhood.
Fire officials said the explosion happened across from 37 Bowdoin St., which is the address for Grotto restaurant.
According to the fire department, both workers are employed by Eversource Energy and were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital by Boston Emergency Medical Services.
The workers were “performing routine maintenance on a piece of underground equipment,” Eversource said in a statement.
“Two workers just doing their job and they were injured doing their job. It’s very sad, so, hopefully, they’re alright,” said Boston fire Commissioner Paul Burke.
Boston police said at least one of those workers suffered serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.
“Both of our employees are being treated at MGH, one for severe injuries caused by the equipment flash and the other for smoke inhalation. Our focus remains on supporting both of our employees and their families,” reads a statement from Eversource.
