On Thursday, September 27, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Cabot Stains, a division of Valspar Corporation, is recalling about 17,500 units of its Wood Cleaner and about 10,900 units of the Wood Brightener.

The Newburyport, Massachusetts manufacturer sold the recalled products at hardware stores nationwide from March 2011 until June 2012 for about $25. Some hardware stores include Ace Hardware, Farm & Fleet, Do It Best, Lowes Home Improvement Stores, and United Hardware.
Both products come in 1.3-gallon white handle tanks with black pump assembly and a sprayer hose. The front of the container has a yellow Cabot label with the product name. The back label contains instructions for use and product information.
The identified hazard is associated with the spray pump, which is capable of losing its seal, causing the product to leak. If the chemicals in the product come in contact with skin or eyes, or are ingested, they can cause burns or other serious injuries. There have been three alleged leak incidents of leaks thus far.
Consumers should not attempt to re-use empty containers, and should immediately stop using the products.
At any point during the consumer product design and manufacturing process, significant failures may contribute to product hazards, including (1) missteps during the early design stages; (2) inadequate testing to ensure safe performance; and (3) marketing efforts that include inadequate instructions and warnings, or even fail to include any relevant cautions. Even one act of negligence during the process from a product’s conception to its sale can cause catastrophic injuries and wrongful death once the product reaches unsuspecting consumers.
