On Tuesday, October 23, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Dorel Juvenile Group, of Columbus, Indiana, is recalling about 97,000 units of Eddie Bauer Rocking Wood Bassinets.

The bassinets were sold nationwide from December 2007 through January 2011 for about $150 at retailers like Target, Toys R US, and Sears, or online at Ebay and other websites. The recalled items, which were manufactured in China, have a dark brown wooden headboard and footboard and a cotton bassinet that comes in different colors and patterns. The bassinets have a dial at the base of the footboard that locks and unlocks the rocking motion of the bassinet. Only the following model numbers are recalled: 10632, 10639, 10832, 10835, 10839 and BT021. Consumers can locate the model numbers under the mattress, on the top surface of the support board, or on the wash and care label.
The bassinets pose a suffocation hazard to infants because the bottom locking mechanism can fail to lock properly if a spring is not installed, which in turn can cause infants to roll to the side of the bassinet. Dorel Juvenile Group has received 17 reports of events involving the recalled items and primarily babies younger than three months old. Two of the reported incidents caused the infants to have breathing difficulties after they rolled into the side of their bassinets.
At any point during the bassinet design and manufacturing process, significant failures may contribute to products’ hazards, including (1) missteps during the early design stages; (2) inadequate testing to ensure safe performance; and (3) marketing efforts that include inadequate instructions and warnings, or even fail to include any relevant cautions. Even one act of negligence during the process from a product’s conception to its sale can cause catastrophic injuries and wrongful death once the product reaches unsuspecting consumers.
