Deaths and illnesses linked to the fungal meningitis and abscess outbreak blamed on a Framingham compounding pharmacy could continue to rise for the next six months — a full year after the last environmentally poisoned drugs were administered — a top doctor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told the Boston Herald.

“We know fungi have long incubation periods. Therefore, we know there will be cases potentially occurring for months after the last injection. Up to a year,” said Dr. Thomas Chiller, deputy chief of the CDC’s Mycotic Diseases Branch.
Chiller said the tragedy that already has claimed at least 50 lives and left 722 other people in 20 states ill is a “phenomenally unprecedented event” that has left medical investigators baffled by never-before-seen contamination of steroid injections by Exserohilum, a common mold found in soil and on grass.
The latest death and illness counts are due out this week; last week’s number showed a surprising increase.
