On November 12, 2013, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) initiated a recall of Riley Duo model bunk beds (model number C 5702, E 5702 or M 5702), manufactured by Wood Castle Furniture of Albany, Oregon.

The openings between the guardrails on the bunk bed can exceed 3 ½ inches in width, which is too wide and does not meet safety standards. This presents an entrapment hazard where a child could be seriously injured or become asphyxiated.
The recalled beds were sold at Dania Furniture and Room and Board Furniture stores nationwide, and online at Roomandboard.com, from January 2008 through December 2011.
While proper labeling, recalls and regulations are important for safety of children’s products, manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure only safe products reach the marketplace, avoiding the potential to cause catastrophic injury. There is simply no excuse for companies to sell dangerous bunk beds to consumers. The burden must be on manufacturers and retailers, not consumers, to identify hazards before their products enter the channels of commerce.
